Revolta de Canudos

The Revolta de Canudos was a conflict that took place in Brazil between 1896 and 1897. It centered around a community founded by a charismatic leader, Antonio Conselheiro, in the northeastern town of Canudos. The village attracted many impoverished people seeking a better life. The Brazilian government viewed this settlement as a threat, leading to a military campaign against it. The conflict resulted in a violent siege and the eventual destruction of Canudos, with thousands of deaths, reflecting deep social and economic tensions in Brazil at the time, particularly between the elite and the marginalized.
