Rev. John William Burgon
Rev. John William Burgon (1813-1888) was an English churchman, scholar, and biblical critic best known for his defense of the Traditional Text of the New Testament. He opposed the emerging critical methods that preferred newer manuscripts, arguing for the reliability of the Textus Receptus, the Greek text underlying the King James Bible. Burgon was also a prominent figure in the Oxford Movement, which sought to revive elements of Anglicanism. His writings on the Bible, particularly his critique of textual criticism, have influenced discussions on how scripture should be interpreted and preserved in Christian tradition.
