Retroviral sequences

Retroviral sequences are segments of DNA that originate from viruses called retroviruses, which can insert their genetic material into a host organism's genome. When retroviruses infect cells, they reverse their RNA into DNA and integrate it into the host’s DNA. Sometimes, these viral sequences become permanent parts of the genome and are passed down through generations, even after the virus is no longer active. In humans, a significant portion of our DNA consists of these ancient retroviral sequences, which can influence gene function and evolution, although most are inactive remnants of past infections.
