Republican Spain

Republican Spain refers to the period from 1931 to 1939 when Spain was governed as a republic, following the abdication of King Alfonso XIII. It was marked by efforts to modernize the country, including land reforms, secularization, and social reforms. The period was politically polarized, with various factions on the left and right, leading to civil conflict. The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) erupted between the democratically elected Republican government and Francisco Franco’s Nationalist forces. Ultimately, Franco's victory established a military dictatorship, ending this republican era and leading to decades of authoritarian rule.
