Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS)
The Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS) is a hormone system that helps regulate blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. When blood pressure drops, the kidneys release an enzyme called renin. Renin triggers the production of angiotensin, a hormone that constricts blood vessels, raising blood pressure. Angiotensin also prompts the release of another hormone, aldosterone, which signals the kidneys to retain salt and water, further increasing blood volume and pressure. Overall, RAS is crucial for maintaining stable blood flow and ensuring organs receive adequate oxygen and nutrients.
