Renal compensation
Renal compensation is the kidney's way of helping the body maintain a balanced pH level when it's too acidic or too basic. If blood becomes too acidic, the kidneys increase the elimination of hydrogen ions and reabsorb more bicarbonate, which neutralizes excess acid. Conversely, if the blood is too basic, the kidneys reduce acid removal and may conserve hydrogen ions to help restore normal pH. This process supports the body's overall acid-base balance, working alongside the lungs, which also help regulate pH through breathing.
