Regurgitation
Regurgitation is the process where food or liquid that has already been swallowed comes back up from the stomach or esophagus without effort, such as vomiting. It may occur naturally, like when infants bring up small amounts of milk, or due to medical conditions affecting the digestive system, like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In such cases, stomach acid or undigested food can flow back into the esophagus, causing discomfort and potential damage. Regurgitation is different from vomiting, which involves active expulsion and sometimes nausea. It’s often a symptom of underlying issues affecting the normal movement of food through the digestive tract.
