Refugee and Asylee Status

Refugee status is granted to individuals who flee their home country due to persecution or fear of persecution based on factors like race, religion, or political opinion, and who are unable to return safely. An asylee is someone who seeks protection in another country after arriving there, also due to similar fears of persecution. While refugees apply for protection from abroad, asylees apply for it once they are in the new country. Both statuses provide legal protection and the opportunity to rebuild their lives in safety.
