Reform of the Carmelite Order
The reform of the Carmelite Order was a movement in the 16th century aimed at returning to the order’s original spiritual ideals of strict prayer, austerity, and community discipline. Originating in Spain, it sought to address perceived laxity and modern influences diluting their spiritual focus. Reforms emphasized a simpler, more ascetic lifestyle, often leading to the establishment of new communities called "Discalced" (barefoot) Carmelites, distinguished by their emphasis on poverty and contemplative prayer. This movement revitalized the order’s commitment to deep spiritual practice and had a lasting impact on Catholic spirituality.
