reflux nephropathy

Reflux nephropathy is kidney damage caused by a condition called vesicoureteral reflux, where urine flows backward from the bladder into the kidneys. This abnormal flow can lead to infections and pressure that harm the kidney tissue over time. Often starting in childhood, it can result in reduced kidney function or scarring, which may increase the risk of hypertension or kidney failure later in life. Diagnosis usually involves imaging tests, and treatment may include antibiotics to prevent infections or surgery to correct the reflux, aiming to protect kidney health.
