Reciprocity Treaty of 1875
The Reciprocity Treaty of 1875 was an agreement between the United States and the Kingdom of Hawaii that aimed to promote trade by reducing tariffs on Hawaiian sugar and other goods. In return, Hawaii gained favorable access to U.S. markets, encouraging economic growth. The treaty also allowed Hawaii to maintain some customs control and had implications for its political sovereignty. Essentially, it created a mutually beneficial trade relationship, boosting Hawaii’s sugar economy while integrating it more closely with the U.S. economy.
