Raiyatwari System

The Raiyatwari System was a land revenue collection method used by the British in India, primarily in the North-Western Provinces. Under this system, the government directly collected taxes from individual landholders called "Raiyats." The amount of tax was based on the land's productivity and was recorded in land revenue records. This system simplified administration by creating clear records of landowners and their obligations, reducing interference by intermediaries. It aimed for efficient tax collection and better land management, but often placed a heavy financial burden on the farmers, affecting their livelihoods.
