Raffinose
Raffinose is a type of carbohydrate called an oligosaccharide, naturally found in foods like beans, cabbage, and whole grains. It consists of multiple sugar units linked together. When we eat raffinose, our bodies can't fully digest it because our enzymes don't break down these complex sugars. Instead, it passes to the large intestine, where bacteria ferment it, producing gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and hydrogen. This process can lead to bloating and gas. Despite this, raffinose is a source of fiber and has potential prebiotic benefits, supporting healthy gut bacteria.
