Radiological Dispersal Device (RDD)

A Radiological Dispersal Device (RDD), often referred to as a "dirty bomb," combines conventional explosives with radioactive materials. When detonated, it spreads radioactive particles over a wide area, causing contamination and panic rather than mass destruction. While the blast from the explosives may cause physical damage, the primary concern is the potential health risks from radiation exposure and the resulting fear and disruption in affected communities. RDDs are considered a means of terrorism, aiming to instill fear rather than achieve significant physical destruction. Effective detection and preparedness are crucial in mitigating the risks associated with RDDs.
