Radioactive Iodine
Radioactive iodine (usually I-131) is a form of iodine that emits radiation as it breaks down. It is used in medical treatments, primarily for thyroid conditions like hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer, because the thyroid gland naturally absorbs iodine from the bloodstream. When radioactive iodine is administered, it selectively targets and destroys overactive or cancerous thyroid cells, helping to regulate or eliminate them. This therapy is generally effective, minimally invasive, and benefits from the thyroid’s unique iodine uptake, allowing targeted treatment with limited effects on other body tissues.
