Pulmonary Physiology
Pulmonary physiology is the study of how our lungs and respiratory system function to facilitate breathing and gas exchange. When we inhale, oxygen from the air enters the lungs, where it passes into tiny air sacs called alveoli. Here, oxygen enters the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide, a waste product, is expelled when we exhale. This process is essential for delivering oxygen to our cells and removing carbon dioxide, helping to maintain the body’s balance, support metabolism, and regulate pH levels. Understanding pulmonary physiology is crucial for recognizing respiratory health and diseases.
