Publication and Education in the Middle Ages
In the Middle Ages, publication and education were primarily the domain of monasteries and universities that emerged in the 12th century. Monks copied manuscripts by hand, preserving texts and knowledge, while universities began offering structured education in subjects like theology, law, and medicine. Access to education was limited to clergy and the elite, as most of the population was illiterate. The invention of the printing press in the late 15th century would later revolutionize the dissemination of knowledge, making books more accessible and laying the groundwork for the Renaissance and the spread of literacy.
