Pseudonitzschia
Pseudonitzschia is a genus of tiny, single-celled algae known as diatoms. These microscopic organisms naturally live in oceans worldwide and are an important part of marine ecosystems, forming the base of many food chains. However, some Pseudonitzschia species can produce a potent neurotoxin called domoic acid, which can accumulate in shellfish and fish. When humans or marine animals consume contaminated seafood, it can cause poisoning known as amnesic shellfish poisoning, affecting memory and health. Monitoring Pseudonitzschia populations helps protect public health and marine life from such risks.
