Protein fermentation
Protein fermentation occurs in the gut when bacteria break down undigested proteins from food. This process mainly happens in the large intestine and produces byproducts like ammonia, phenols, and certain gases, which can sometimes cause discomfort or unpleasant odors. While some fermentation is normal and beneficial, excessive protein fermentation may lead to issues such as bloating or altered gut health. The body typically digests most proteins in the stomach and small intestine, but any remaining proteins that reach the colon are subject to microbial fermentation. Managing protein intake and gut health can help balance this process.
