Prisoner of war

A prisoner of war (POW) is a member of a military force who is captured and held by an enemy during an armed conflict. POWs are protected under international laws, such as the Geneva Conventions, which set standards for humane treatment, lawful treatment, and proper handling. Their status recognizes their role as combatants, not criminals, and they often remain in captivity until the conflict ends and they are released or exchanged. Protecting POWs aims to uphold human rights and prevent mistreatment or abuse during wartime.
