POUM (Worker's Party of Marxist Unification)

The POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista) was a Spanish communist party active mainly during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It originated from a split within the Communist movement, emphasizing revolutionary socialism and opposed to both Stalinist policies and more moderate socialist approaches. POUM advocated for revolutionary change through workers’ control and Marxist principles but was often seen as opposition to the Soviet-aligned Communist Party. During the war, it played a significant role on the Republican side, aligning with anarchists and other factions fighting against fascist forces. The party was suppressed after the war as Franco's regime took control of Spain.
