Potassium iodide

Potassium iodide is a chemical compound used to protect the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine exposure, particularly during nuclear accidents. When taken in appropriate doses, it saturates the thyroid with stable iodine, preventing the absorption of harmful radioactive iodine that could increase the risk of thyroid cancer. It is most effective when administered shortly before or after exposure. While generally safe when used correctly, it should only be taken under medical guidance, as unnecessary use can cause side effects or disrupt iodine balance in the body.
