Popular Sandinista Movement

The Sandinista Movement, officially called the Sandinista National Liberation Front, is a political group in Nicaragua founded in the 1960s to oppose dictatorship and promote social reforms. Named after Augusto César Sandino, a national hero, they aimed to fight inequality, improve education and healthcare, and reduce U.S. influence. They led a successful revolution in 1979 that ousted the authoritarian government, establishing a socialist-oriented administration. Over the years, their policies and political actions have garnered both support for their social programs and criticism for authoritarian tendencies and economic challenges. The movement remains a significant force in Nicaragua's politics today.
