Pope Urban VIII
Pope Urban VIII, born Maffeo Barberini, served as the head of the Catholic Church from 1623 to 1644. He was known for actively supporting the arts and scientific endeavors, including commissioning works by Bernini and promoting Galileo’s studies. His papacy was also marked by efforts to strengthen church authority and expand its influence across Europe. Despite his patronage of culture, his reign faced criticism for political conflicts and accusations of favoritism. Urban VIII’s leadership had a lasting impact on religious, artistic, and scientific developments during the early Baroque period.
