Pope Leo IV was the head of the Catholic Church from 847 to 855. He is known for strengthening defenses of Rome, notably repairing and enhancing the city's walls after they were damaged by invaders. Leo IV also worked to improve church discipline and supported the arts and Christian education. His papacy was marked by efforts to protect Rome and its spiritual authority during a turbulent period marked by external threats and internal conflicts within the church.
