Pope Clement V

Pope Clement V, born Bertrand de Got, served as pope from 1305 to 1314. He is best known for moving the papacy from Rome to Avignon, France, a period known as the Avignon Papacy. This relocation was influenced by political pressures, particularly from the French king. Clement V’s papacy dealt with various issues, including the aftermath of the Knights Templar’s arrest and the church's responses to heresy. His tenure marked significant shifts in church power dynamics and laid the groundwork for future conflicts within Christianity, particularly related to papal authority and the church’s role in European politics.
