Polycythemia Vera
Polycythemia Vera (PV) is a rare blood disorder where the bone marrow produces too many red blood cells. This can lead to thickened blood, making it harder for the heart to pump and increasing the risk of blood clots. Symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, and a reddish appearance of the skin. PV is often associated with a mutation in the JAK2 gene. While the exact cause is unknown, it generally occurs in older adults. Treatment focuses on reducing blood thickness through procedures like phlebotomy (removing blood), and sometimes medication to manage symptoms and complications.
