Polish United Workers' Party

The Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) was the dominant communist party in Poland from 1948 to 1990. It governed the country under a single-party system aligned with the Soviet Union, implementing socialist policies and controlling political, economic, and social life. The party was formed through the merger of earlier communist groups and maintained power through suppression of opposition and centralized authority. Its influence declined during the late 1980s, leading to political reforms and the eventual transition to a democratic system in 1989-1990. The PZPR played a central role in Poland’s communist era but dissolved as the country embraced pluralism and democracy.
