Podocytes

Podocytes are specialized cells located in the kidneys that play a crucial role in filtering blood. They form part of the filtration barrier in tiny structures called glomeruli, which remove waste products and excess fluids from the bloodstream. The podocytes have foot-like extensions that surround the tiny blood vessels, helping to prevent large molecules like proteins from passing into the urine. Their health and structure are vital for proper kidney function, and damage to podocytes can lead to kidney diseases such as proteinuria, where proteins leak into the urine.
