Plasmodium (genus)
Plasmodium is a genus of single-celled parasites responsible for malaria, a serious disease transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female mosquitoes, particularly the Anopheles species. There are several Plasmodium species, with Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax being the most common and harmful. Once inside the bloodstream, these parasites invade red blood cells, causing symptoms like fever, chills, and fatigue. Malaria can lead to severe health issues and even death if untreated. Prevention focuses on mosquito control, using bed nets, and taking antimalarial medications in high-risk areas.
