Plague

Plague is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacterium *Yersinia pestis*. It primarily affects rodents and is transmitted to humans through flea bites or contact with infected animals. Plague can manifest in different forms, including bubonic (swelling of lymph nodes), septicemic (infection in the blood), and pneumonic (infection in the lungs). Historically, plague caused significant pandemics, including the Black Death in the 14th century, leading to millions of deaths. Today, it is rare due to improved sanitation and antibiotics, but outbreaks can still occur, especially in rural areas where rodents are present.
