Pitting Corrosion

Pitting corrosion is a localized form of rust that creates small, deep holes or pits in a metal surface. It occurs when a protective oxide layer on the metal breaks down, often due to chlorides or other aggressive chemicals, allowing corrosion to start at specific spots. These tiny pits can quickly deepen and weaken the material, leading to potential structural failure. Pitting is particularly dangerous because it can be difficult to detect and may cause significant damage without obvious signs of overall surface corrosion. Proper maintenance and protective coatings help prevent this type of corrosion.
