Pinochet regime

The Pinochet regime was a period from 1973 to 1990 when General Augusto Pinochet ruled Chile after a military coup that overthrew the government. His government was authoritarian, characterized by political repression, censorship, and human rights abuses, including torture and forced disappearances of opponents. Despite economic reforms that promoted free-market policies leading to growth, the regime was widely criticized for its disregard of democracy and civil liberties. Pinochet's rule ended with Chile restoring democratic elections, leaving a complex legacy of economic development alongside severe political repression.
