Phospholipase A2
Phospholipase A2 is an enzyme that plays a key role in breaking down cell membranes by hydrolyzing phospholipids, the molecules that make up these membranes. When activated, it releases fatty acids like arachidonic acid, which are precursors for important signaling molecules such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes—metabolites involved in inflammation, immune responses, and other physiological processes. This enzyme is vital for normal cellular functions but can also contribute to inflammation and tissue damage if overactive, making it a target for certain anti-inflammatory drugs.
