The Phoenicians were an ancient Semitic people known for their maritime skills, trading across the Mediterranean around 1500-300 BCE. Originating from the region of modern Lebanon, they established influential city-states like Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos. Noted for their craftsmanship, especially in purple dye, glass, and cedar wood, they created a widespread trade network. The Phoenicians also developed one of the earliest alphabets, which greatly influenced later writing systems. Their seafaring expertise and commercial enterprises helped spread culture, technology, and ideas throughout the ancient world.
