PEEP (Positive End-Expiratory Pressure)
Positive End-Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) is a medical technique used in ventilation, particularly for patients with respiratory issues. It involves maintaining a slight pressure in the airways at the end of exhalation, which helps keep the small air sacs in the lungs (alveoli) open. This improves oxygen exchange and prevents the collapse of these sacs, enhancing overall lung function. PEEP is often used in patients on mechanical ventilation, ensuring they receive adequate oxygen and improving their chances of recovery from conditions like pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
