Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) collection is a medical procedure used to gather stem cells from a person’s bloodstream. These stem cells are immature cells that can develop into various blood cells and are often used for transplants to treat certain cancers and blood disorders. The process involves giving the donor or patient injections of a medication called growth factor for a few days to increase stem cell numbers in the blood. During the collection, blood is drawn through a machine that separates out the stem cells and returns the remaining blood components to the body.
