Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP)

Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) is a serious illness caused by consuming shellfish contaminated with toxins produced by certain types of algae, particularly dinoflagellates. These toxins, mainly saxitoxin, can block nerve signals, leading to symptoms such as numbness, dizziness, weakness, and in severe cases, paralysis. PSP can be life-threatening if respiratory muscles become paralyzed. It is a concern for fishermen, seafood processors, and consumers, especially in areas where shellfish are harvested from algae-rich waters. Monitoring and testing shellfish before harvesting help prevent PSP, which has no specific cure but can be managed with supportive care.
