Papal Resignation

A Papal resignation occurs when a pope voluntarily steps down from his position as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. This is a rare event; the last pope to resign was Pope Benedict XVI in 2013. Resignations happen due to advanced age, health issues, or other significant reasons that prevent effective leadership. The process involves a formal announcement to the Church and the Vatican’s governing body, after which a new pope is elected. Resignation is considered a prudent decision when it allows for better Church management rather than remaining in office while unable to fulfill duties.
