Pap Smear (Papanicolaou Test)

A Pap smear, or Papanicolaou test, is a medical screening procedure for women designed to detect abnormal cell changes in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. During the test, a healthcare provider collects cells from the cervix using a gentle brush or spatula. These cells are then examined under a microscope to identify signs of cervical cancer or pre-cancer. Regular Pap smears are important for early detection and prevention of cervical cancer, usually recommended for women starting at age 21 and continuing every few years depending on age and health history.
