Ottoman legislative body
The Ottoman legislative body evolved over time, beginning with advisory councils and culminating in formal assemblies like the General Assembly of the Ottoman Empire established in 1876. This parliament, called the "Meclis-i Mebusan," was responsible for passing laws, approving budgets, and representing different regions and groups within the empire. It reflected attempts to modernize governance by balancing imperial authority with emerging notions of representative government. However, its powers were limited, and real authority remained with the Sultan and executive branches. The legislative body played a key role in the empire’s political reforms during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
