Otosclerosis
Otosclerosis is a condition where abnormal bone growth occurs in the middle ear, specifically around the stapes bone, one of the tiny bones that help transmit sound. This extra bone buildup can interfere with the movement of the stapes, leading to gradual hearing loss. It often starts in early to middle adulthood and may affect one or both ears. The cause isn’t fully understood but may involve genetic factors. Treatment options include hearing aids or surgery to remove or bypass the abnormal bone, helping to restore hearing function.
