Oregon Treaty

The Oregon Treaty was an agreement made in 1846 between the United States and Britain to settle their border dispute in North America. Prior to this, both nations claimed the Oregon Territory, which stretched from California to present-day Canada. The treaty established the boundary along the 49th parallel (except for Vancouver Island), giving the U.S. control of present-day Oregon, Washington, and parts of Idaho and Montana. This peaceful resolution prevented conflict and defined U.S. territory in the Pacific Northwest, shaping the nation’s western border for future generations.
