Optimality theory

Optimality Theory is a framework used in linguistics to explain how languages choose the best possible option from a set of competing possibilities. It suggests that all languages have a set of ranked constraints—rules about constraints on sounds or meanings—and that speakers unconsciously select options that best satisfy these constraints. The “optimal” choice is the one that minimizes violations of the highest-ranked constraints, leading to variations across different languages. This theory helps us understand the complexities of pronunciation, grammar, and meaning in human communication.
