Opt-in vs. Opt-out Systems

Opt-in and opt-out systems refer to how individuals consent to participate in something, like receiving information or being part of a program. In an opt-in system, you must actively agree to participate, usually by checking a box or signing up. In contrast, an opt-out system automatically includes you unless you take steps to decline, such as unchecking a box. Opt-in systems prioritize personal choice and consent, while opt-out systems assume consent by default, which can raise concerns about whether individuals are fully aware of their participation.
