OPGL (Osteoprotegerin Ligand)
OPGL, also known as RANKL (Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor Kappa-B Ligand), is a protein crucial for bone health. It signals to certain cells called osteoclasts, which are responsible for breaking down bone tissue. By binding to its partner RANK on osteoclasts, OPGL stimulates their formation and activity, promoting bone resorption. This process is balanced by other factors like osteoprotegerin (OPG), which acts as a decoy receptor to neutralize OPGL, preventing excessive bone loss. Proper regulation of OPGL is essential for maintaining healthy bone density and structure.
