Oosterscheldekering
The Oosterscheldekering, or Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier, is a major flood defense structure in the Netherlands, designed to protect the low-lying Zeeland region from storm surges and rising sea levels. Completed in 1986, it is part of the Delta Works project, which was initiated after the devastating North Sea flood of 1953. The barrier features large sliding doors that can be closed during severe weather, helping to manage water levels and maintain safety for both land and marine environments. It is an engineering marvel, balancing flood protection with the need for a functioning ecosystem.
