Oncovirus

An oncovirus is a type of virus that can cause cancer in humans. These viruses infect cells and sometimes trigger changes in their DNA, leading to uncontrolled growth and tumor development. Not all infections with oncoviruses result in cancer, but in some cases, the virus’s influence increases the risk. Examples include human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer, and hepatitis B and C viruses, linked to liver cancer. Vaccines and screening programs can help prevent some oncovirus-associated cancers. Understanding and controlling these viruses are important steps in cancer prevention and public health.
