Onate's Expedition

Onate's Expedition (1598) was a Spanish colonization journey led by Juan de Oñate to explore and settle parts of present-day New Mexico. Oñate aimed to establish a Spanish presence, convert Native Americans to Christianity, and find wealth. The expedition faced challenges, including harsh terrain and conflicts with indigenous peoples. Oñate's group established a settlement at San Juan Pueblo and claimed the territory for Spain. However, his leadership was controversial, marked by violence and harsh treatment of Native Americans, leading to his eventual recall to Spain in 1606. The expedition played a significant role in early Spanish colonization efforts in North America.
