Old Hag Syndrome
Old Hag Syndrome, also known as sleep paralysis, occurs when a person wakes up during the REM sleep stage but temporarily experiences paralysis and vivid hallucinations. This state can cause feelings of a threatening presence or pressure on the chest, often leading to fear or distress. It typically lasts seconds to minutes and is often associated with disrupted sleep, stress, or sleep deprivation. Despite its frightening sensations, it is harmless and resolves on its own. Understanding that it's a natural sleep phenomenon can help reduce anxiety and prevent future episodes through better sleep habits.
